Best October Festivals in Spain
Even though October is not the busiest month in Spain when it comes to festivals there are enough to keep everyone amused.
Top festivals, fiestas and feria during October include the Fuengirola feria which is fast becoming one of the largest of its kind on the Costa del Sol.
Spain closes down on the 12th October for the Dia de la Hispanidia, Spain’s national day.
El Dia de la Hispanidad ( National Holiday October 12th )
This is Spain’s national holiday and is celebrated on the 12th October each year. During the day, Spaniards commemorate the first time that Christopher Columbus sailed for the Americas.
There is an armed forces parade held in Madrid which usually includes members of the Spanish royal family plus a wide range of foreign dignitaries are usually in attendance as well.
Fuengirola Annual Feria
The annual Fuengirola fair has grown into one of the largest held on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. It is known as the Feria del Rosario, named after the patron of the town, the Virgen Rosario.
The main festival is held on a large adapted area close to the town center which is and just 10 minutes walk from the Fuengirola train station.
Here you will numerous the Casetas ( decorated buildings ), a large fairground for the kids and lots of small bars serving food all day and night.
This week-long festival includes two massive firework displays, horse parades, a bull run, horse carriage parades, street parties, country BBQ fair, all-night dancing and much more.
The Human Towers of Tarragona
Like the famous Merce festival held during September in Barcelona, the human tower festival held in Tarragona is held between June and October and is well worth visiting.
The unique tradition of building human towers "Castells" makes for an unforgettable experience.
The towers are formed by teams that practice throughout the year and can reach up to 10 stories in height. Once built the participants must dismantle the tower without falling.
The Bilbao Night Marathon
The Bilbao Night Marathon is a charitable event held during October each year and offers participants the chance to take part in a 10K run, a half marathon at 21K or the full-blown run at 42K.
The marathon starts at the San Mames football stadium, home of Bilbao FC, and ends at the emblematic Guggenheim Museum.
When the run is over the party begins with a spectacular fireworks display, live performances and street parties that carry on well into the night.
Zaragoza is home to the Fiesta del Pilar which is held the week before the 12th of October each year. They are held in honour of the patron saint of the city, the Virgen del Pilar.
This is a major event for Zaragoza each year where many thousands of locals pay tribute to their patron saint dressing up in colourful costumes and leaving flowers dedicated to El Pilar.
Almost half a million people will eventually take part in the flower parade as well as enjoy the dances, parades and all-night parties that are quite frequent during festival week.
Jazz in Catalonia
For music lovers Barcelona and Catalonia is awash with the soothing sounds of Jazz held across the region during October.
The Barcelona Jazz Festival starts around the 5th of October running to the end of the month.
Concerts include the Font Magica de Montjuic, Barcelona Cultural District, Bebo Valdes 100 and the Checo Valdes Jazz Bata.
This is your chance to get up close with some of the top exponents of Jazz plus many up and coming artists.
Seville Guitar Festival
If you are into the authentic sounds of Spain then head off to the Seville Guitar Festival held each year normally around the months of September and October, although dates do vary so it's always best to check out the official website beforehand.
2019 will be the 10th edition of this entertaining event, this year's theme revolves around "Dreams and Truth". Some of Spain's top Spanish guitarists are involved in playing a whole range of classical, jazz and Flamenco guitar concerts.
Festival De Otono – Autumn Festival Madrid
This festival runs for around four weeks from October to November in Spain’s capital Madrid.
This autumn festival offers you well over 60 dance, theatre, and music spectacles and has become one of the city’s main performing arts events.
During the week, a wide range of performances is conducted mainly to showcase the beauty and creativity of the Spanish people.
Annual Fantasy Film and Horror Film Festival
During this festival, a wide range of horror films are screened at different venues and mainly at the Teatro Principal. Lots of other events include outdoor performances, comedy events and horror-related exhibitions.
