Fiestas del Pilar:

This cultural festival takes place from October 9th to 18th in Zaragoza, in the province of Zaragoza. It celebrates Our Lady of the Pillar (La Virgen del Pilar), the patron saint of Zaragoza and Spain.

The festival features hundreds of events, such as concerts, parades, fireworks and exhibitions. One of the most emblematic attractions is the offering of flowers to the Virgin, where thousands of people dressed in traditional costumes bring flowers to a giant statue of the Virgin in the Plaza del Pilar.

Fiestas de San Froilan:

This is a folkloric festival typically held the first week of  October in Lugo, in the province of Lugo.

It celebrates Saint Froilan, the patron saint of Lugo and Leon. The festival features music, dancing and gastronomy.

One of the most popular attractions is the pulpo a feira (octopus fair), where visitors can taste octopus cooked in large copper pots and seasoned with paprika and olive oil.

The Moors and Christians Festival:

An important and historic event in the town of Crevillent, in the province of Alicante, from September 29th to October 4th.

It acts as a recreation of the conflicts between Christians and Muslims in mediaeval Spain.

The festival includes fireworks, music, parades, and costumes. The participants are split into two groups: the Moors, who dress traditionally and wear turbans, and the Christians, who dress in armour from the Middle Ages and carry crosses.

Film Festivals:

October is the month of film festivals in Spain. Some major film festivals organized in October include the Marbella Film Festival (October 6th to 10th), which showcases independent films worldwide.

The Valladolid Film Festival (Last week of October) focuses on European cinema and awards prizes such as the Golden Spike for the best film, and the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival (Last week of October and first week of November) features horror, fantasy, and science fiction films from different countries.

Fuengirola Fair:

This festive fair takes place from October 6th to 12th in Fuengirola, in the province of Málaga. It is similar to other fairs held on the Costa del Sol but with a more international flavour.

The fair features food stalls, music, dancing and bullfighting. The fairgrounds are located near the beach and are divided into different areas representing different countries and regions, such as Spain, Germany, Argentina and Andalusia.

Dia de la Hispanidad:

This is a national day in Spain that takes place on October 12th. It commemorates the first time that Christopher Columbus sailed for America in 1492.

The day is marked by an armed forces parade held in Madrid, which usually includes members of the royal family and foreign dignitaries.

This national holiday coincides with other celebrations, such as El Pilar in Zaragoza and El Día de la Raza (The Day of Race) in Latin America.

This gastronomic festival takes place from October 29th to 31st in Consuegra, in the province of Toledo.

It celebrates saffron, one of Spain's most prized spices, which is obtained from the stigmas of a crocus flower.

The festival features activities such as saffron picking, saffron cooking contests, saffron tasting, and saffron exhibitions. It also includes music, dancing, and windmill tours.

Madrid Autumn Festival:

This cultural festival takes place from October 15th to November 15th in Madrid, the capital city of Spain. It showcases contemporary performing arts such as theatre, dance, music and circus from different countries and cultures.

The Madrid Autumn Festival includes shows held at various venues across Madrid, such as theatres, museums and cultural centres.

In Alcala de Henares:

This literary event, called Cervantes Week, is usually held mid-September. It honours Miguel de Cervantes, one of the most important figures in Spanish literature and the creator of Don Quixote.

The festival includes concerts, readings, exhibitions, and book fairs.

The Cervantes Prize ceremony, the most esteemed literary award in the Spanish language, is also part of the festival.

Seafood Festival:

This gastronomic festival usually takes place in the first 2 weeks of October in the picturesque coastal village of O Grove, in the province of Pontevedra. It celebrates the abundant seafood and shellfish in this part of Galicia.

The festival features a large seafood market where visitors can buy and sample a variety of seafood cooked in different ways.

This tasty festival also includes music, dancing and competitions.

Don Juan en Alcala:

This theatrical festival takes place on October 31st in Alcalá de Henares, in the province of Madrid.

It consists of a nighttime performance of Don Juan Tenorio, a classic Spanish play by José Zorrilla that tells the story of a notorious seducer and his fate after death.

The performance is held at the Plaza de Cervantes, a historic square illuminated by candles and torches.

El Dia de la Hispanidad ( National Holiday October 12th )

This is Spain’s national holiday and is celebrated on the 12th of October each year. During the day, Spaniards commemorate the first time Christopher Columbus sailed for the Americas.

There is an armed forces parade held in Madrid, which usually includes members of the Spanish royal family, plus a wide range of foreign dignitaries are usually in attendance as well.

Fuengirola Annual Feria

The annual Fuengirola fair has grown into one of the largest held on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. It is known as the Feria del Rosario, named after the town's patron, Virgen Rosario.

The main festival is held in a large adapted area close to the town centre, just a 10-minute walk from the Fuengirola train station.

Here, you will find numerous Casetas ( decorated buildings ), a large fairground for the kids, and many small bars serving food all day and night.

This week-long festival includes two massive fireworks displays, horse parades, a bull run, horse carriage parades, street parties, a country BBQ fair, all-night dancing, and much more.

The Human Towers of Tarragona


Like the famous Merce festival in September in Barcelona, the human tower festival in Tarragona is held between June and October and is well worth visiting.

The unique tradition of building human towers "Castells" makes for an unforgettable experience.

The towers are formed by teams that practice throughout the year and can reach up to 10 stories in height. Once built, the participants must dismantle the tower without falling.

The Bilbao Night Marathon

The Bilbao Night Marathon is a charitable event held in October each year. Participants can choose to run a 10K, a half-marathon at 21K, or a full-blown 42 K.

The marathon starts at the San Mames football stadium, home of Bilbao FC, and ends at the emblematic Guggenheim Museum.

When the run is over, the party begins with a spectacular fireworks display, live performances, and street parties that continue well into the night.

Zaragoza Festival

Zaragoza is home to the Fiesta del Pilar, held the week before the 12th of October each year. They are held honouring the city's patron saint, the Virgen del Pilar. 

This is a significant event for Zaragoza each year, where many thousands of locals pay tribute to their patron saint by dressing up in colourful costumes and leaving flowers dedicated to El Pilar.

Almost half a million people will eventually participate in the flower parade and enjoy the dances, parades, and all-night parties that are frequent during festival week.

For music lovers, Barcelona and Catalonia are awash with the soothing sounds of Jazz held across the region during October.

The Barcelona Jazz Festival starts the first week of October and runs to the end of the month.

Concerts include the Font Magica de Montjuic, Barcelona Cultural District, Bebo Valdes 100 and the Checo Valdes Jazz Bata.
