But to get the most out of this magnificent island, how about going beyond the traditional touristy route. Here are some of the more unusual things to do on this island of eternal spring.
Tenerife island is a popular tourist destination because of its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, sunshine, and magnificent beaches, a dormant volcano, and the Carnaval de Santa Cruz.
You can snorkel (with turtles!), admire some unique landscapes, climb a volcano, and much more.
If you go a little deeper and do some research on the island, you can find plenty of fun things to do that will truly enhance your trip.
To help you I have compiled a list of our favorite unusual things to do on the island.
Let's dive right in.
Tenerife's Majestic Whales - See Them With Your Own Eyes

If you've never seen whales before, catching a glimpse of them on a Tenerife sea trip might as well be the highlight of your holiday.
You can expect to see pilot and humpback whales regardless of the season. It's a thrilling sight, and if you're lucky, you might even spot a few dolphins.
And look, it's not the same as observing them at a sea zoo.
Here you'll see the whales and dolphins in their natural habitat, making the experience much more adventurous.
A word of caution: Tenerife whale and dolphin excursions along the shores usually last about three hours so make sure to pack a large tube of sunscreen to protect yourself from the rays. Having said that a guided boat trip of this kind is highly recommended.
Cueva del Viento - An Underground Experience

Tenerife mountains in the north hide a spectacular world underneath.
The Cueva del Viento caves are a complex lava tube system formed over 27,000 years ago by volcanic activity.
And guess what? You can take a guided tour of these ancient rock formations. It's an atmospheric adventure that's hands down one of the most unusual things you can experience in Tenerife.
The guide takes you through different levels and passages of the caves to explore the hidden marvels of Europe's largest lava tunnel.
A Kayak Ride Along Tenerife's Coastline

Here's another way to see the dolphins: take a kayak ride through the marine reserves.
If you're lucky, you'll also enjoy the company of some turtles along the way.
A tour guide will take you along the coast to explore secret caves, hidden bays, and wonderous cliffs.
Some journeys take place during a romantic sunset (perfect for a date night!).
And some tours even take you to sheltered spots for some snorkelling. Check out the available Kayak and marine tours so you can find something specifically for your taste of adventure.
Pyramids in Tenerife

Visiting Pyramides in Tenerife mist rank as one of the most unusual things to do in Tenerife, however, they do actually exist on the island.
Not far from the most popular Tenerife resorts lies a mysterious site: the Pyramids of Güímar.
You can find them at an Ethnographic botanical park where you can also find a lovely museum.
However, don't expect to get any answers to who built the pyramids and why. No one knows for sure. That is why it's such a good discussion topic with your friends and family.
And although the pyramids are the stars of the park, the exotic plants and a terrace with panoramic views of the surroundings are also memorable sights.
You can get catchy pictures on every corner of this place.
Los Gigantes - Cliffs With Drama

There are many ways to get a good view of these imposing sea cliffs on the west coast of Tenerife. You can take a boat ride to see them from the water.
And yes, the trip probably includes some snorkeling, swimming, and whale watching also.
But if getting into the water is not your thing, you can also admire Los Gigantes from dry land. A day trip to Teide National Park takes you to the best cliff-observing locations.
The Mystical Ancient Dragon Tree

A trip to lcod de los Vinos to the ancient dragon tree will be anything but ordinary.
The famous tree, located in the northwest of the island, is more than 1000 years old and has become a symbol of Tenerife.
It's an iconic landmark that's talked a lot about in Tenerife hotels and tourist information points.
The tree exudes a deep red resin that's akin to a dragon's blood. Many people believe the tree resin has healing effects.
You can admire the strange, spiked foliage and curly branches up close.
Paragliding Over Tenerife

What better way to celebrate the end of Tenerife lockdown than taking a paragliding tour in the blue skies of the island? It gives you a whole new perspective on the gorgeous landscapes.
Try the Costa Adeje tandem paragliding experience for the thrill of your life!

And don't worry if you've never tried paragliding before. The skilled pilots make sure you feel safe and relaxed while taking in the picturesque views.
La Orotava - Known for Its Balconies

La Orotava is a charming small town with beautiful gardens, eye-catching architecture, and tropical fruit plantations.
It is well known for its ornate balconies crafted by skilful masters of the past, they're a typical example of magnificent Canarian architecture.

Anaga Mountains - Hiking Trails for Everyone

The island of Tenerife was born millions of years ago from volcanic eruptions and one of the oldest parts of its landmass is the Anaga Mountains.
The mountains are situated in the northeast and hide a plethora of different hiking routes.
The forests are ancient (from the Tertiary Age, 2.6 million years ago), and descending through the misty trees transports you to a fairy-tale-like fantasy world.
Some routes are excellent for beginners, families, and older people. Others are more challenging and are for the more experienced hiker.
