The best five family holiday resorts in Mallorca
When it comes to summer holidays with the children Mallorca is hard to beat with its miles of white sandy beaches and calm, clear turquoise coloured water and beautiful countryside.
Away from the beaches and water sports, you have plenty of fun things to do with the kids that include theme parks, antique train rides, massive caves and historic tours.
Mallorca is less than a three-hour flight from any UK airport and with many airlines offering cheap flights to Mallorca, its a relatively affordable holiday destination too.
Compact, clean and safe, Mallorca has a vast range of family-friendly accommodation to suit all budgets. Reaching your accommodation can be done by buses or taxis but we always recommend booking a private taxi or transfer online from Palma de Mallorca airport for peace of mind.
Weather-wise Mallorca is almost perfect with hours of endless sun-filled days guaranteed between June and September when the temperature hovers around 30ºC.
With so many resorts to choose from, we decided to help make your decision making a little easier by putting together a list of our five favourite resorts and what they have to offer.
Port d'Alcudia grew over the last forty years to become one of the most popular family holiday destinations on the island of Mallorca. Home to the longest beach in the Balearics, Port d'Alcudia boasts 7 kilometres of white sand lapped by safe shallow waters that are perfect for young children. Backed by beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants you will never be at a loss to find somewhere to eat. All types of water sports are on offer including diving, sailing, kayaking and stand-up-paddleboarding as well as day trips to Menorca and dolphin watching tours. The resort also has a huge waterpark full of giant slides, trampolines and mini golf. For an escape from the beach, you can visit the medieval walled town of Alcudia and its nearby Roman ruins.
Located in the southwest of Mallorca just 30 minutes from the airport, Santa Ponsa has everything you are looking for in a family fun summer destination and so much more. Featuring two “Blue Flagged” beaches the 1300-meters long Playa Santa Ponsa and the small cove setting beach of Caló d’en Pallisser you will find every facility you would expect to see in a top-notch Spanish resort. Away from the water, you have a number of theme parks to choose from as well as go-karting and golf. Nightlife centres on the beach and the town’s main square where they welcome families with open arms. An added bonus is that Santa Ponsa is close to the capital Palma where you will find some of the world’s best restaurants and designer shopping to die for.
Palma Nova has a reputation of being a party town, but if you stay in a hotel down by the marina it is perfect for families. Playa Carregador is the best of the resorts three beaches with fine white sand and a children’s play area adjacent to the promenade. Every water sport imaginable is on offer, plus you have plenty of activities and waterparks in the nearby town of Magaluf.
Originally modelled on a white washed Iberian village, all buildings had to be no more than 1 storey to help create the desired effect. However in the latter years the laws have been relaxed allowing slightly taller buildings in the resort. You will find beautiful little coves of golden sandy beaches with calm Mediterranean waters which makes it a very popular destination with families.
Located on the aptly named “family coast” on Majorca’s south-east shoreline Cala d'Or started life as a copy of a typical white-washed village complete with cobbled streets and low rise housing. Despite the building laws being relaxed to allow more growth, the charm of the place remains undeniable. Full of small cove beaches with fine white sand you will find sunbeds for hire and plenty of beach activities to keep the kids busy. Cala d'Or does not have the attractions that you will find in larger resorts, but it does have a glitzy marina, plenty of shopping and loads of restaurants and bars. If you are looking for a laid back holiday in the sun Cala d'Or ticks all the right boxes.
Port de Soller
Until recently a well-kept secret, Port de Soller in the west of the island is a postcard-perfect Mallorca coastal village surrounded by mountains. Before a road tunnel opened in 1997 Port de Soller was difficult to get to, allowing the area to escape the massive tourist development that was happening in other parts of the island.
With its traditional charm intact Port de Soller attracts a more upmarket clientele who like to stroll its lovely promenade while watching arguably the best sunset on the island.
Port de Soller is connected to the nearby town of Soller by a vintage tram that takes you on a picturesque journey through the lemon groves. Once in Soller, you can enjoy its vibrant Saturday market of catch and antique wooden panelled Swiss train to the capital Palma.
These are just a few of the wonderful holiday destinations on the island of Mallorca where you will find a summer holiday destination to suit all tastes and budgets.
